Spacer flanges are very similar to spectacle blinds apart from the fact that they are not attached to each other. Used extensively in the oil and gas industries, spacer flanges are applied in systems where maintenance is not required or in applications where there are significantly large pipe sizes.

If maintenance is required on the pipeline then a spacer flange can be temporarily replaced with a spade flange. This is done by loosening all the bolts and temporarily removing half of the bolts so that the spacer flange can be replaced with the spade flange, gaskets replaced and then the bolts re-assembled.

Spacer flange specifications

Spacer or spade flanges are not easy to identify when they are mounted so the handles usually have special markings or they have a slightly different design so that they can be identified easily. These can often be manufactured to the specification of the customer. An important feature of the handle is that it should have the diameter and the pressure class engraved so they can be used for the appropriate circumstances.
